WCW Underground 2.17

- No "previously on" segment this week.

- Opening video.

- Lenny Leonard and JML are are the commentary position as usual. Lenny talks about how big of an event SuperBrawl was and mentions that DOOMSDAY retained their championship in an epic battle. JML talks about Albright, with his new manager Austin Aries, becoming United States Championship. They segue into an introduction to Chris Jericho. Lenny asks Jericho about the low-blow at SuperBrawl and whether not it was an accident. Jericho says that when you're the in the ring, things happen all the time that you can't control. He says he's seen men injured from the simplest of moves, like hip-tosses, and at the end of the day he didn't mean to kick Hero low - it just happened that way. Lenny then talks about how Jericho will defend the title in Japan later this month, which will officially classify the WCW Championship with World-status. Jericho says he's proud to defend the belt in Japan and that he has a storied history of working in the Far East. Lenny finally brings up Jericho's next iPPV opponent: CM Punk. Jericho says he's watched CM Punk for years and has always known that one day he would have to come face-to-face with Punk. He says that there's a lot of credibility to Punk's comments about being the "now" of pro wrestling, because that's exactly what he is. Jericho says that none of that will matter when they finally face off, because as great as Punk is - he'll never be able to come close to the class of pro-wrestler that Chris Jericho is. Jericho leaves on that remark.

Match #1: Derrick Driver/Steven Walters vs. The Hollywood Kings
The Hollywood Kings are Brian Kendrick and Joey Ryan. This is your typical squash, since this is technically their debut in their newly-defined roles. They're not different from before in anyway, really. They do introduce some new offense, with the best spot being one where Kendrick ranas Driver into a spear by Ryan. The finish is the same they used as Three Kings - the assisted DDT (Problem Solver/Snapshot/etc.) they call Regicide.

Result: The Hollywood Kings win via pin w/ Regicide
Time: 4:21

- Before the Kings can conduct their post-match interview, they're blindsided by Karl Anderson and RODERICK STRONG~! Anderson nails both Ryan and Kendrick with a spinebuster. Then Anderson grabs Kendrick by the head and shoves Kendrick right into a Sick Kick from Strong. They then do the same thing to Ryan. A couple of officials storm the ring and get Anderson and Strong out of there.

- Karl Anderson and Roderick Strong are at the commentary table and guess who they're with? Austin Aries. Lenny asks Aries what in the world is going on. Aries says that Ryan and Kendrick made the biggest mistake of their lives turning him down. He says last Saturday when he watched Karl Anderson kick out of DOOMSDAY's Omega Driver - he knew exactly what he had to do, so he went backstage and tossed the best contract deal he could give Anderson and BAM - the deal was done. Aries says with Brent Albright as United States Champion and the 'Machine Gun' Karl Anderson on the A-LIST now, he knew he needed another man to pair with Anderson - someone unlike that giant oaf Bernard - someone who could get the job done. Aries says, "Who better than the man I used to dominate tag team wrestling with my self? Who better than the MESSIAH of the Backbreaker? Who better than Roderick Strong?" He says the Kings made a huge mistake and they paid for it tonight, but they're not the only ones who are going to pay. Aries says the entire locker room just got put on notice - the greatest manager in the world has all of the A-LIST talent and pretty soon they'll have all of the championship gold. Great promo!

Match #2: Anthony Andrews vs. Brodie Lee
Big boot, Boss Man Slam.

Result: Brodie Lee wins via pin w/ The Boss Man Slam
Time: 0:19

- Brodie Lee goes to the commentary table for his interview. Lenny asks him if there's any hope of stopping his run of destruction. Brodie delivers another phenomenal promo that would be better-served transcribed word-for-word:

"No, Leonard, there is no hope. Now I reckon you and John have heard the same rumblin's I have. Hell, I reckon everyone here in this arena has. They say a storm is comin' to Atlanta, Leonard. They say a violent force is comin' for payback. They say the Necro Butcher is comin' home. Well, that's fine. I said it a long time ago and I'll say it again. Maybe I deserve Hell for what I done to ya Butcher - maybe. But what you won't find is me runnin' scared. We been down this road before, ya and I, and it ain't nothin' that goin' to get me hidin' from ya. Brother, I tore that damn eye out with purpose and pure malice. It weren't no fun and games what I did. I always knew the day would come when we have to stare each other down again and let me tell ya, brother, we goin' to stare each down. All these damned fools in this arena, Butcher? They just want to see you bleed. I want to see you die."
Brodie leaves after that.

- CM Punk comes out with Drew Gallows for an interview. Lenny asks him how he feels now that he's top contender to the WCW Championship. Punk says it feels pretty nice that the world is finally starting to turn in the proper direction. He says that "Little" Davey is a spirited guy, and he kicks really hard, but wisdom will always outmatch jiu-jitsu in pro wrestling. Lenny asks if Punk is concerned about the WCW Championship match in Japan. Punk says he'd love to be the man who finally sends Jericho to the great dive-bar in the sky, where Jericho can play his crappy music with his crappy band for the rest of his life, but if he has to beat up Go Shiozaki - then so be it. Punk says that pro wrestling has always been about being the best - and from here on out he's going to prove that by being straight-edge, he's not just better than you - he's the best in the world.

Match #3: Drew Gallows vs. Ric King
I expected this to be the same squash as the Brodie Lee-match, but it's not. Gallows actually extends the squash for a bit of time. Since it goes longer than normal, it allows Gallows to show off a lot more of what he has to offer than normal. Gallows is, in a lot of ways, a great power worker. All of the moves he uses always come off very painful-looking, like his sidewalk slam. It's a longer squash than we're used to with Gallows - but it still ends the only way it can: big boot, power bomb.

Result: Drew Gallows wins via pin w/ a power bomb
Time: 4:22

The Event Center
Nothing special this week as Mike Hogewood just talks about SuperBrawl. A lengthy segment that details each match and development without giving any of the actual in-ring content away. Hogewood shills the iPPV replay on GFL. Next week he promises information on a LIVE edition of Underground, plus we'll hear from Jay Briscoe.

- With the return from the break, The Old School Wrecking Crew is at ringside. Lenny talks about the Crew's successful match at SuperBrawl. Pearce says that the outcome might have been questionable to the morons in the audience or idiots like Lenny, but he and Corino always knew what was going to happen. He says now the stage is set for WCW's top, undefeated tag team to finally make a play for the WCW Tag Team Championship. Pearce says he hopes more than anything that DOOMSDAY leave Japan as World Tag Team Champions, because nothing would be sweeter than knocking a fatass like Takeshi Morishima back to Japan. Corino says that he's been doing this for over a decade and he's finally getting a legitimate opportunity to show the world just what he's all about. He says for over ten years he's been ignored in favor of douchebags like Davey Richards and Chris Jericho, but at The Great American Bash - NO MORE. Corino says that lives will be ruined when they walk away from the rampage. Good stuff.

Match #4: Kid Mafia vs. Richie Steamboat
Lenny talks about Steamboat's concussion that put him out of action. Steamboat gets in his usual offense - the arm drags, the flying crossbody, the rolling suplexes, etc. Mafia tries to heel it up, but Steamboat will have none of it and finishes him off with the Dragon Suplex.

Result: Richie Steamboat wins via pin w/ The Dragon Suplex
Time: 4:46

- Richie gets his interview, of course. Lenny welcomes him back and asks what it was like to be out with the concussion. Richie says he hated being away from the ring because anytime you're away, that gives someone else an opportunity to climb up the ranks in your place. He says he did what he had to do and what the doctors told him to do, but now he's back and he's ready to starting making some headway towards some gold. Lenny starts to ask him another question but is interrupted by CHRIS HERO~! Hero wants to know why the hell this kid is getting interviewed when it should be the man who was screwed out of the WCW Championship last Saturday. He says Jericho is a cheater and everyone knows it. Lenny tries to tell Hero that this is Steamboat's time, but Hero just pie-faces Steamboat! They get into some fisticuffs and are separated by the regular officials.

Main Event: Alberto Dos Caras vs. Windham Rotunda
This should be an interesting match. I wonder if these two ever clashed in FCW? This match actually plays out more like your standard WWE match than a WCW main event. Alberto out-wrestles Windham, but then Windham starts out-brawling Alberto. Alberto manages to drive Windham into the ring-post, shoulder-first, early on to set the stage for the match. From there it's nothing but Albert working the arm. Alberto has gotten very good at this particular role, I must say. Windham does a fantastic job selling, as well. A big moment comes when they're outside as Alberto tries to wrap the arm around the ring-post, but Windham drags Alberto face-first into the ring-post instead. Windham follows that up with one hell of a Samoan drop on the concrete. They end up back in the ring and it devolves into a slugfest, and in which case Albert is at an extreme disadvantage. Windham beats Alberto up in one corner and then tosses him into the other, locking him in a Tree of Woe. Windham then hits one hell of a cannonball into the corner for two! Haven't seen that from him before, but I like it! Windham goes for the Death Valley Driver, but the left-arm is too weak to really lock in the fireman's carry, which allows Alberto nail the arm-breaker on the knees that he does. Windham counters a few Destiny Lock attempts with cradles for near-falls. The Patriot then makes his way out with a huge American flag and waves it at ring-side, distracting Alberto. Alberto turns around and gets cradled by Windham for the HUGE upset!

Result: Windham Rotunda wins via pin w/ an inside cradle
Time: 16:32

- Alberto argues with the referee, while Windham celebrates on the outside with The Patriot to end the show.
