WCW Underground 1.16

- Previously on WCW Underground: WCW held a press conference in Atlanta and made all sorts of big announcements. PLUS~! Fastball Special teamed with the Briscoes to take on The Cross and Three Kings in a marathon match of awesomeness.

- Lenny Leonard is at ringside by himself tonight. He talks up the big show tomorrow night and runs down the entire card. He says that all of the major players will be in action tonight and will be here to give their thoughts on tomorrow's big show.

Match #1: Drew Gallows vs. Cru Jones
SQUASH~! Gallows give Jones a big boot and a power bomb to win in incredibly quick fashion.

Result: Drew Gallows win via pin w/ a power bomb
Time: 0:24

- Promo-time. Punk says tomorrow night he brings to an end the career of a man who doesn't even belong in the pro wrestling business. He says that the Necro Butcher has, for too long, degraded the sport of professional wrestling with his garbage-style. He says tomorrow night that he and the Butcher will be intrinsically linked together, not just by a dog collar, but by pain and hatred. Decent stuff.

- A video recap of the Punk/Butcher-feud is shown.

- No commercials tonight, apparently, as we come back from the video to Leonard standing next to Fastball Special. Here's a transcript of London's wackiness: "The Generic Luchador has been put through a table twice times by the menacing Swedes that are The Cross. Well no more. Tomorrow, the moons collide and the stars fly as we do battle with wrestling's least wanted. We will bask in the stardust of comets and bathe in a sea of mollusks - the end game arrives Castagnoli, Ares, the end game arrives." It's funny watching Generico try not to crack up.

Match #2: Drew Adler/Shane Rockwell vs. Fastball Special
Another squash match. London works over Adler, then Generico works over Rockwell. Finish comes when Generico gives Rockwell the brainbuster and London lands on him with a Shooting Star Press.

Result: Fastball Special win via pin w/ The Shooting Star Press
Time: 2:41

- A video package plays hyping the Fastball Special/Cross-feud.

Match #3: Caleb Konley/Sal Rinauro vs. Wrestling's Greatest Tag Team
Another squash. WGTT win with WGF. I think I'm sensing a trend here.

Result: Wrestling's Greatest Tag Team win via pin w/ WGF
Time: 2:11

- Indeed, it's promo-time. I suspect this is what the entire show is going to be like. Haas says he has nothing but the utmost respect for DOOMSDAY and Bison Smith. He says tomorrow night is about paying tribute to a great man in the best way they can, fighting it out over being the best. He says tomorrow isn't about hatred, it's about competition. He wants to prove that he and Shelton are the best, and he respects that DOOMSDAY wants to do the same in honor of their fallen friend. He says they'll keep it clean in the ring tomorrow out of respect. The crowd responds favorably, and it's almost like they're turning WGTT face?

Match #4: Brent Albright vs. Bo Newsom
Albright tosses Newsom on his head a few times and locks in the Crowbar for the win.

Result: Brent Albright wins via submission w/ The Crowbar
Time: 3:11

- Albright says his career in WCW hasn't reached the levels it should because of key mis-steps here and there. He says tomorrow night he finally gets the brass ring by winning the United States championship. He respects Eddie Edwards, but frankly, Eddie is beneath him and no matter what - tomorrow night - Albright is walking away with gold.

- A commercial finally plays hyping WCWwrestling.com.

Match #5: Michael Cannon/Lee Roy vs. Three Kings
The Kings this time around are Austin Aries and Joey Ryan. A quick squash here, as they finish Cannon off with Regicide.

Result: Three Kings win via pin w/ Regicide
Time: 2:11

- Aries cuts a promo for his guys. He calls the Briscoes and JML inbred hicks and white trash. He says the Kings shouldn't have to sully themselves getting in a ring with their kind, but sometimes you do what you have to do. He says a past-his-prime JML won't make a damn bit of difference tomorrow night and that the end result will be the same one way or the other: the Kings will be on top of the mountain and the Briscoes will be in the gutters.

- A video package plays recapping the Briscoes/Kings-feud.

- Alberto Dos Caras is out. He says tomorrow night is a night of reckoning, not just for WCW and Chris Jericho, but for the fans. The fans who boo him and the people who hate him because he's the best. He says tomorrow they will have to come to terms with the cold, harsh truth: no one is better than Alberto Dos Caras. Tomorrow night, Chris Jericho will be defeated. Just like Kurt Angle. Just like Davey Richards. He says that tomorrow, Dos Caras will walk away the champion and return home to celebrate Christmas with his loving wife, while America and Canada celebrate their failures.

Match #6: Claudio Castagnoli vs. Hayden Young
Claudio squashes the local talent with a bicycle kick and Ricola Bomb. This was literally the same squash as Drew Gallows' match earlier.

Result: Claudio Castagnoli wins via pin w/ The Ricola Bomb
Time: 0:34

- The Cross cut a promo, but it's all in German which draws MASSIVE heat.

- A commercial plays for Starrcade.

Match #7: Necro Butcher vs. Steve Corino
We're about halfway through the show and this is the seventh match. Brodiee Lee is with Necro. Butcher and Corino brawl to the outside. Corino gets tossed into the barricades a couple of times as Leonard puts over Butcher's hatred of Punk. Back into the ring and Butcher nails Corino with the Deathdrop for the win.

Result: Necro Butcher wins via pin w/ The Deathdrop
Time: 4:11

- Butcher and Lee are ready for a promo. BUT FIRST~! Adam Pearce makes a bit of a surprise return. Corino is losing his shit at ringside, but Pearce calms him down and they walk off together. Butcher says tomorrow night is the end. Tomorrow night there will be blood, there will be pain, and there will be an end. He says this thing between him and Punk can't go on any longer. He intends to bleed Punk like a pig and put an end to his sanctimonious straight-edge bullshit. He says after tomorrow night when he and Punk are threw brutalizing each other, there will only be one guarantee: neither of them will see Heaven. AMAZING~!

- The video recap of the Butcher/Punk-feud from earlier plays again.

Match #8: Seth Delay vs. Davey Richards
Eddie Edwards is with Davey. It's a squash, but Delay does get a bit of time to shine thanks to Davey. An extended squash, we'll call it. Davey wins with the DR Driver.

Result: Davey Richards wins via pin w/ The DR Driver
Time: 5:11

- Edwards starts the promo off talking about his match tomorrow night. He says for a long time that Davey Richards has been "The Guy" and he's had to live in his shadow. Tomorrow night he steps out of that shadow when Brent Albright taps out to the Achilles Lock. Davey says he knows what Eddie's talking about and that he's extremely proud of Eddie. He says he hopes tomorrow night that Eddie can step from his shadow, because no one deserves it more. He says he's pulling for Eddie to get the big win. They shake hands and Eddie walks off. Davey then turns his attention to Chris Hero. He says Hero has established himself as a disrespectful prick. He's mid-sentence when Hero sneak attacks him from behind. Hero nails Richards with the Deathblow before Edwards returns to run Hero off.

- Another commercial plays for WCWwrestling.com.

- The Briscoes are with JML at ringside. JML says when he retired, all he ever wanted to do in life was call wrestling and enjoy the view. He says Austin Aries couldn't cut the mustard on commentary and for some reason or another, can't get over the fact he was replaced. Well tomorrow night, all of our differences are going to be settled. He says the pretty boys from Hollywood are going to have get their hands dirty, because it won't be a wrestling match - it'll be a brawl. Jay and Mark then go into a promo themselves. It is, of course, completely indecipherable. They end by yelling "MAN UP!" a bunch of times.

- The video of the Briscoes/Kings-feud plays again.

- James Jacobs and DOOMSDAY are at ringside now. Jacobs says tomorrow night will be a test of faith, as these two men will do battle with Wrestling's Greatest Tag Team in honor of the fallen Bison Smith. He says that the lost comrade will be there in spirit to guide these two who have never teamed before. Tomorrow night, new tag team champions will be crowned and as sure as the sun will burn out and the Heavens will fall, DOOMSDAY will come Wrestling's Greatest Tag Team.

- A video recaps the Dos Cara/Jericho-feud.

- A commercial plays for Starrcade.

Main Event: Chris Jericho vs. Vordell Walker
Now there's a guy I haven't heard about in a while. He worked ROH a few times in the past. Jericho gives him some room, but like Davey earlier - this is just an extended squash. Jericho beats him over pretty soundly, finishing with the Codebreaker/Lionsault combo.

Result: Chris Jericho wins via pin w/ The Lionsault
Time: 5:51

- Final promo of the show~! Jericho says that tomorrow night is the biggest night of the year for him. He'll have an opportunity to win the WCW Championship and show the fans worldwide what it means to be a champion. He says he's heard everything Caras has had to say and that the time for talk is over. Caras comes out to interrupt him. He says Jericho is a peasant and completely undeserving of a match. They have some choice words for each other and end face-to-face. Jericho says let's settle this now and gets in the ring, beckoning for Caras. Caras won't join him though. Jericho takes the mic and says tomorrow night, he doesn't have a choice - they'll fight it out one-on-one and the better man will walk away and unfortunately for Caras, Jericho is the best there is at what he does. Pretty good segment altogether to end the show.

- The show ends with a huge video package for the PPV tomorrow.

- I have to say, comparatively speaking, this was a pretty jarring episode. On one hand, as a go-home show with the sole purpose of advertising the iPPV which is tomorrow night: mission accomplished. Each match was given time to be promoted. On other hand, every match was a squash - so as a standalone show, there's nothing to it. In any event, tomorrow's PPV should be HUGE.
